How to Access iPad Poker Sites
There are two choices available for iPad users who want to play online poker – app or browser.
Which is best is the subject of debate. There are benefits and drawbacks for each method and the key is to find the one which suits you the best.
You can download apps though only from the biggest poker sites like PokerStars and 888. These are available directly from the sites. The benefit is that you get a smoother playing experience, with the apps written especially for iOS devices. You will be limited in terms of the number of tables you can play. Apps do have integrated cashiers these days, so you will be able to deposit and withdraw from your site from you iPad.
The main drawback is that you will not find many apps available. None of the US friendly offshore sites currently offer one, and most of the sites with the loosest poker games (for example iPoker) also have no app.
Browser poker games are more common. In the past, there were issues with compatibility for these (since Apple withdrew their support for Flash). These days, HTML5 is ubiquitous, and has largely solved compatibility issues. Generally speaking, you can only play one table at a time in your browser – and some real money poker sites restrict you to certain types of games.
As long as your connection is good, you’ll find browser games smooth and reliable compared to a few years ago. One irritating issue is that you will need to wait for the games to initialize in your browser each time you play.
Best iPad Poker Sites for US Players
Choices are very limited for any type of mobile poker at the offshore US sites. Only Ignition Poker offer mobile games at all. This is the biggest US poker site, having taken over the room from Bovada. You can play cash games via their browser software, including their fast-fold variation ‘Zone Poker’. The Ignition Poker desktop software is dated compared to other sites – and the browser games are functional rather than attractive.
While the software is not ideal, the games at Ignition are very soft (thanks to their recreational player model). Many players would agree that ugly software is more than made up for by the potentially very profitable games!
iPad Poker Sites for Worldwide Players
Outside of the US there are poker sites which have the reach and profits to fund top quality mobile poker software. Both 888 Poker and PokerStars have excellent iOS compatible apps. These will work on your iPhone as well as iPad. Each of these allows you to get to all the main game categories; tournaments, cash games, fast fold poker and sit n goes.
Party Poker also have a mobile compatible site, which works very nicely in your browser window. There are some limited iPoker options – though PlayTech, which created the software that this network is based on, was a little late to the mobile device party.
One excellent mobile site to consider is Unibet. This is another recreational poker site, and their graphics / gameplay really does stand out from the crowd.
What Kind of Poker Games can I Play on My iPad?
When it comes to iPad poker games, some formats are definitely better than others.
The new generation of Fast-Fold poker games are ideal for dipping into for a quick-fire poker session. Here you start a new hand against new opponents the moment you fold (even out of turn) in the old one. This means you can play 1 table and get 4x the number of hands per hour that you would in a regular cash game. Of course, those old-style cash games have the advantage of giving you time to pick up on betting patterns and styles of your opponents.
Tournaments are the longer format of the game – and are perhaps better suited to desktop play (where you can multi-table easier). Sit N Goes, especially the new super-fast lottery sit and go format are a much better bet.
