Highly Disputed
Some people view Black Friday of the downfall of online poker in the United States, but at the same time it has been the main impetus in the movement for legalized online poker in the US. The Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid, has spoken out in saying that each and every state should stop attempting to develop their own online poker bills because it may interfere with poker being legalized on the national level. He has made this statement because, supposedly, there is a bill in the works that will appear before Congress shortly. Of course, these are just rumors at this point.
In 2006 the UIGEA attempted to kill the thriving online poker market in the US, but failed for the most part as alot of sites continued to accept US-based players. But of course, as we all know, the online poker business in the US was more or less killed on April 15th of this year.
New Jersey Moves Forward
Senator Rayemond Lesniak from New Jersey has announced that he has an intrastate poker bill that is currently being drafted up. This is in lue of Harry Reid’s request to stop making state to state online poker bills. It is supposed to be a revised version of the bill that was vetoed last year by Governor Chris Christie. Lesniak is defying Reid’s request because he sees nothing but infinite benefit in creating guidelines for an intrastate poker system. The most recent figures say that legalized online poker in New Jersey could bring in a large profit that ranges in upwards of $50 million yearly.
